What we do with Bacula

Bacula solves it.
We implement it.

Bacula is the most mature open source enterprise backup software on the market — and yes, that bat in its logo has been protecting data for over 20 years in banks, government agencies, telcos, hospitals and scientific data centres at petabyte scale.

But getting Bacula right requires serious engineering. Sizing storage daemons, partitioning the catalogue, integrating with tape libraries or object storage, defining retention policies and automated verification — this is where most projects get stuck, and where we have spent years working on critical infrastructure on IBM Power, Linux, VMware and Proxmox.

SIXE does not resell vendor licences. We are independent engineers who deploy, migrate, optimise and support Bacula — so your backup is genuinely yours, with no strings attached and no surprises at renewal time.

How we work

A Bacula project at SIXE, step by step.

No endless meetings, no generic quotes, no calendar promises that fall apart later. These are the steps every client who trusts us with their backup goes through.

Linux servers and enterprise storage in datacenter — Bacula support by SIXE
01
Initial technical call We talk directly with your team. No salespeople, no PowerPoint presentations. We understand what you have, what you need and where it hurts.
02
Audit or architecture design If you already have Bacula, we audit it. If you're starting from scratch, we design the architecture: directors, storage daemons, catalogue, retention and backend.
03
Deployment or migration with coexistence We implement on your infrastructure. If you're coming from Veeam or Veritas, we keep both systems running in parallel until Bacula has fully proven itself.
04
Ongoing support + knowledge transfer 24/7 support if you need it, and we leave your team trained to operate Bacula independently. No lock-in to SIXE.
Why Bacula with SIXE

What changes when you work with an independent partner.

Your backup has to be genuinely yours. No licences tied to TBs, no surprises at renewal, no remote engineers who don't understand your infrastructure.

We work side by side with your technical team so that you master Bacula yourselves — not the other way round. If one day you decide to part ways with SIXE, you take everything with you and it keeps running. Period. Learn more about our engineering team and why we have been betting on open source for years.

Zero real vendor lock-in Bacula is genuine open source. Your infrastructure, your catalogues, your data — no padlocks.
The engineer who picks up the phone is the one who fixes it No helpdesks, no tickets escalating between tiers, no call centres. You speak directly to a senior engineer.
Specialists in critical infrastructure Bacula on IBM Power, AIX, Linux, Proxmox, VMware, Kubernetes and demanding databases.
Slash your licensing costs in one go Migrating from Veeam or Veritas to Bacula usually pays for itself in less than a year. You see the numbers before we start.
Use cases

Bacula fits where other solutions give up.

From the classic datacenter to modern cloud-native environments. These are the scenarios where we have deployed Bacula most successfully.

VMware and Proxmox backup VM-level backup with consistent snapshots, incrementals and differentials. Granular file restore without bringing the whole VM up.
IBM Power, AIX and Linux on Power Bacula runs natively on IBM Power. Backup of LPARs, JFS2, raw volumes, DB2, Oracle. Integration with IBM TS tape libraries and FlashSystem.
Hot database backup PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle, DB2, MS SQL Server. Hot backup without stopping the service, point-in-time recovery and automated verification.
Kubernetes and containers Backup of persistent volumes, etcd, secrets and cluster configuration for Kubernetes and OpenShift. Integration with Velero and CSI snapshots.
Backup to Ceph, S3 and object storage Storage on Ceph, MinIO, AWS S3, Azure Blob. Source-side encryption, deduplication and immutability policies for ransomware protection.
Tape libraries and WORM LTO-8, LTO-9, IBM TS4500, Quantum, Spectra. WORM support for regulatory compliance (ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA, sector-specific frameworks).
FAQ

What people always ask us.

If your question isn't here, just write to us — we like adding new ones to the list.

What's the difference between Bacula Community and Bacula Enterprise?
Bacula Community is the complete open source edition, free and with all the core features, maintained by the Bacula project. Bacula Enterprise is the commercial edition from the vendor (Bacula Systems), which adds specific plugins, official support and additional tools like BWeb. At SIXE we work with both: we help you choose which one fits your case and, in many scenarios, Community + our engineering support proves more cost-effective than Enterprise.
How much do you save by migrating from Veeam or Veritas to Bacula?
It depends on the size of your infrastructure and how your current vendor charges (per protected TB, per host, per socket…). For mid-sized clients we have seen reductions of 60-85% in annual backup cost in the first year. We do a proper cost analysis with no commitment so you can see the real numbers before starting.
Does migrating to Bacula mean losing my old backup history?
No. We design the migration with a coexistence window in which your current backup keeps running while Bacula gradually takes over. We keep access to the old history for as long as your retention policy or compliance requirements need it.
Is Bacula really suitable for critical enterprise environments?
Yes. Bacula has been in production for over 20 years in banks, government agencies, telcos, hospitals and scientific data centres at petabyte scale. The key isn't the software — it's how you design the architecture: sizing of directors and storage daemons, catalogue partitioning, retention policy, integration with tape or object storage. That's where our engineering comes in, especially in environments running on IBM Power, Linux and Proxmox.
What SLA do you offer for Bacula technical support?
We have several levels depending on how critical the environment is. Standard covers business hours (Mon-Fri 8:30-16:30 GMT+1) with response in under 4 hours. The 24/7 tier guarantees immediate attention for critical incidents with a senior engineer always on call. If your system is already down, take a look at our emergency systems support.
Are you an official Bacula Systems partner?
We work with both Bacula editions and we know the vendor's team. But our value proposition is to be your independent partner. If you need Bacula Enterprise, we tell you so, deploy it and support it without conflict of interest.
