DB2

We deliver IBM official Db2 training on Linux, UNIX and Windows and on z/OS, plus two courses of our own that do not exist in the IBM catalogue. We teach on the release you have installed rather than the one the official outline pins, so nobody pays to look at screens from a release they have not installed. The person teaching is the same engineer who administers and migrates these engines. Several of the team are IBM Champions.

The ideal path

Db2 on distributed and Db2 on the mainframe are two products with two different teams, so there are two paths and they do not cross.

If you administer Db2 on Linux, UNIX or Windows, the order is the administration workshop on Linux (CL207G) — four days to build the instance, create the database, move data and get the backups standing — and then performance tuning and monitoring (CL413G), where you learn to read an access plan instead of guessing. By the end the team installs, loads data, restores a backup and can read an access plan before asking for a new index. If you are already DBAs on another engine, the quickstart for experienced DBAs (CL485G) trims the conceptual part and gets further in the same four days.

If you administer Db2 on z/OS, the order is z/OS and Db2 fundamentals (CV041G) if the team does not come from the mainframe, or the introduction to Db2 for z/OS (CV021G) if TSO and JCL are already familiar; then database administration part 1 (CV832G), the five-day backbone; and then part 2 (CV843G) for online schema changes, partitions and stored procedures. With that the team creates objects, sets up referential integrity, recovers a table and changes the schema without stopping the service.

By level

Beginner. Db2 Family Fundamentals (CE031G) for anyone who has to talk to the data team without administering anything; the Db2 SQL Workshop (CE121G) to start writing SQL; and the introduction to Db2 for z/OS (CV021G) or z/OS and Db2 fundamentals (CV041G) as the way into the mainframe. Also CLA90G, the Db2 12.1 version of it.

Intermediate. The administration workshops: the administration workshop on Linux (CL207G) on Linux, CL213G on AIX, CL235G on Windows and CL2X3G when the estate is mixed. On the mainframe, database administration part 1 (CV832G) and CV844G, plus CV845G on release 13. And to write SQL properly, the advanced SQL workshop (CE131G) or CLA91G.

Expert. Performance: performance tuning and monitoring (CL413G) and CL443G for partitioned databases on distributed, CV963G and CV964G on the mainframe. Advanced administration: BLU Acceleration (CL451G), CL463G, CL464G, CL487G and CLA96G on distributed; CV842G, part 2 (CV843G), CV880G and CV871G on the mainframe, plus CV722G for anyone programming against it. Systems and platform: CV851G, CV852G, CV853G and the Db2 13 implementation workshop (CV862G). And CL810G for high availability with HADR.

Two courses that are ours

Our Db2 12.1 administration course for AIX and Linux covers Db2 12.1 administration on AIX and Linux on the current release of the engine, which almost nobody carries. And our Db2 pureScale course walks through deploying and administering a pureScale cluster end to end, including the part you only learn by having built one in production.

About releases

Each course outline is pinned to a release, and the IBM catalogue carries old codes along. What matters is the release you are on.

On distributed, Db2 12.1 is the current release, out in November 2024. Db2 11.1 went out of support on 30 April 2026. On 11.5 it depends on the edition: some withdrawn ones close extended support on 30 September 2026 and others run considerably longer, so it is worth checking yours. Either way the training is the same and the labs are what change.

On the mainframe, Db2 13 for z/OS is the current release with no announced end-of-support date. Db2 12 left standard support on 31 December 2025 and keeps extended support until 31 December 2028: if the migration is still pending, the course that covers it step by step is the Db2 13 implementation workshop (CV862G), and CV320G explains what changed on the way to 12.
