From PowerVM theory
to the HMC console.

Three days with a real production environment simulated in our labs: LPARs running on redundant VIOS on IBM Power servers. The goal is that you leave with effective operational skill, not just notes.

We cover the areas that show up every day in production — advanced HMC administration, DLPAR operations, storage virtualization with MPIO and SDDPCM, network virtualization with SEA Failover, Etherchannel and vNICs, and AIX installation on client LPARs. The course combines theory and practice with high-availability and redundancy best practices.

From the LPAR concept to daily operation

Three days that build the same environment layer by layer: we start with PowerVM and the HMC, deploy redundant VIOS, virtualize storage and network, and end by installing AIX on client LPARs.

Fundamentals and advanced administration

  • Virtualization with PowerVM: features, capabilities and internal architecture.
  • Advanced HMC administration and day-to-day LPAR operations.
  • DLPAR (Dynamic LPAR) operations and common troubleshooting.

  • Full installation and configuration of VIO Server.

Common questions

What prior experience do I need?

At least one year of prior experience administering AIX or Linux on Power Systems. It is an advanced-level course — we don't start from zero on the operating system, we do on PowerVM virtualization.

How does it differ from the official IBM AN30G / AN31G courses?

This is a SIXE-developed course with an intensive, hands-on approach on a production environment simulated in our labs. The official IBM courses (AN30G Implementing Virtualization and AN31G Advanced PowerVM and Performance) follow the official IBM syllabus and are also delivered by SIXE separately within the IBM Power Systems catalog.

What hardware are the labs run on?

On real IBM Power servers in our own labs, with LPARs running on redundant VIOS. Each participant works against an environment that simulates production, not a desktop simulator.

Does the course cover both AIX and Linux on Power?

Yes. PowerVM virtualization is cross-cutting to both operating systems. Although client LPAR installation is exercised with AIX, all concepts (VIOS, HMC, DLPAR, MPIO, SDDPCM, SEA Failover, Etherchannel, vNICs) apply directly to Linux on Power.
