Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Storage Scale, GPFS and Spectrum Scale?

Same product with different names over time: GPFS (General Parallel File System, historical name), then IBM Spectrum Scale from 2015, and since 2022 IBM Storage Scale (official IBM rename). Our courses cover the current version with historical context of all stages.

And Storage Protect vs Spectrum Protect vs TSM?

Same story: Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) until 2015, IBM Spectrum Protect until 2022, now IBM Storage Protect. Courses cover both Storage Protect v8.1.24 and Storage Protect Plus (separate line focused on VM and container backup).

Which do I choose: IBM Storage Scale or Ceph?

IBM Storage Scale fits where parallel filesystem performance is critical (HPC, AI, low-latency financial environments) and you need enterprise IBM support. Ceph fits where you prioritise cost, open source and flexibility (SDS on commodity hardware, cloud workloads, OpenStack environments). We can train teams on both routes and help decide which applies.

Do the official IBM courses prepare for certification?

Yes. H005G / H006G / H008G prepare the IBM Storage Scale certification track. SP631G / SP641G / TS626G prepare the IBM Storage Protect one. Materials are the official IBM Training and are delivered with the latest available version.

Course format and group size?

On-site or live-remote (virtual classroom), from 2 students. We adapt duration and intensity to the team profile. Labs use real clusters — not simulators — so the team is ready to operate the system in production.
