Support and maintenance for IBM i (AS400)

L2/L3 support, 8×5 or 24×7: PTFs, upgrades from 7.4 to 7.5 or 7.6, and Power8 and Power9 servers that IBM no longer covers, with refurbished parts when needed.

End of support

IBM i 7.4 is out of standard support

On 30 September 2026 IBM ended standard support for IBM i 7.4, the release many production AS400 systems still run, and anyone staying on it no longer receives the PTFs IBM uses to fix bugs and security holes. The system keeps running, but any vulnerability published from now on stays unpatched unless you pay for IBM’s extension, which costs more than normal support and ends on 30 September 2029.

And if your server is a Power9 scale-out such as the S914, S922 or S924, which IBM took off standard hardware maintenance on 31 January 2026, you have two deadlines instead of one, and it pays to decide the order before a hardware failure decides it for you.

What you can do depends mainly on the server, because each Power generation supports IBM i up to a specific release:

ServerUp to IBM iWhat it lets you do
Power87.4No new release without changing hardware or moving workloads to the cloud
Power97.5Move to 7.5 and buy time; 7.6 needs a different server
Power10 (firmware FW1060 or later)7.6Jump straight from 7.4 to 7.6
Power117.6Jump straight from 7.4 to 7.6

What it covers

From the operating system to the RPG code

Operating system and upgrades

We apply PTFs and prepare every release upgrade with a rollback plan, testing it first on a separate partition or a copy of the system.

Hardware that lasts longer

We look after firmware and the HMC, and extend the life of Power8 and Power9 servers that IBM no longer maintains, using refurbished or second-hand parts when one needs replacing. It costs less than a refresh and creates far less waste.

What runs on top

Db2 for i, backups with BRMS (IBM i’s own backup tool) and security with PowerSC. If you move to 7.6, we help you with the two-factor sign-on that IBM now includes.

RPG and COBOL code

If your developers are retiring, i2040 is our succession programme: we select and train new developers and back them with L3 production support for five years.

How we start

First we look at what you have

System review

From what we find, we tell you today’s risks and which path makes sense: upgrade, extend the server’s life or replace it.

Tailored proposal

A yearly contract that covers only what you need, 8×5 or 24×7.

Kick-off

We assign you an engineer, set up remote access and start with what is pending, which is almost always PTFs and firmware.

Ongoing support

We keep PTFs up to date, review the system regularly and, on a 24×7 contract, handle serious incidents at any hour.

We work in English, Spanish and French, and if a system is down and you have no contract yet, our emergency support contacts you within 15 minutes.

FAQ

Questions we get before signing

Are AS400 and IBM i the same thing?

In practice, yes. AS/400 is the original name; IBM later renamed it iSeries, System i and finally IBM i on Power servers. Most companies still call it AS400, and to see your release just check the header of the DSPPTF command: V7R4M0 is IBM i 7.4.

Does my AS400 stop working if it stays on IBM i 7.4?

No. It keeps working, but since 30 September 2026 it gets no fixes or technical support from IBM unless you buy the paid extension.

I already have SWMA with IBM. Why would I need you?

SWMA entitles you to PTFs and new IBM i releases, but it doesn’t install them or tell you when and how to upgrade without stopping production, and that is what we do. We also review which licences and contracts you still need with IBM, in case you are overpaying.

Do you support Power8 and Power9 systems that IBM no longer maintains?

Yes. We keep them in production, with refurbished or second-hand parts when needed, and advise you on when moving to Power10 or Power11 makes sense for your applications.

What if my RPG developers are retiring?

That is what i2040 is for: we select candidates, train them in RPG, ILE, COBOL and Db2 for i for three months and support them with mentoring and L3 support for up to five years.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the server, the release and what runs on it. We start with a review of your system and then give you a fixed proposal.
