[ 01 ]Why this course

Your way into upstream OpenStack.

More and more teams are moving off VMware and building their own private cloud. But actually deploying and running OpenStack in production remains one of the scarcest skills on the market. This course gives you the foundation to do it with Kolla-Ansible, the leading upstream tool — without tying yourself to any single vendor's roadmap.

It's the Basic level of SIXE's OpenStack training path. It stands on its own, or you can pair it with our VMware migration module for SMBs that want to leave the old environment behind in the same course.

[ 02 ]Who it's for · what you take home

A course built for real teams, not the catalogue

It's for your team if…

  • You're Linux sysadmins looking to add private cloud to the toolbox.
  • You're VMware admins pivoting as licence costs get out of hand.
  • You're about to inherit an OpenStack platform (your own or one you've migrated to) and want to understand it from the inside.
  • No OpenStack background needed — just comfort with the Linux CLI, basic networking and virtualisation concepts.

By the end, you're already running it

  • You understand OpenStack's architecture and can choose between upstream and distros on merit.
  • You deploy a multi-node cloud from scratch with Kolla-Ansible.
  • You handle day-to-day operations via the dashboard, CLI and API.
  • You troubleshoot the usual first-line issues without calling a vendor.
  • You've got the grounding to move on to the Intermediate level or to run your own cloud confidently from day one.

From whiteboard sketch to a cloud that actually runs

Across three days you build the same platform, layer by layer. Theory only shows up when you're about to use it. Want more detail? Tell us about your project.

01 Day 1

Architecture and first deployment

  • How to think about OpenStack when you're coming from VMware or classic virtualisation.
  • Anatomy of the platform: what makes it up and how the parts talk to each other.
  • Full deployment with Kolla-Ansible, the leading upstream tool in production.
Hands-on lab
02 Day 2

Identity, images and compute

  • How projects, users, roles and quotas are organised.
  • The full lifecycle of virtual machines, start to finish.
  • Administration via the dashboard, CLI and API.
Hands-on lab
03 Day 3

Networking, storage and operations

  • Virtual networks that deliver real service, with OVN under the hood.
  • Persistent volumes, snapshots and boot-from-volume.
  • First steps with infrastructure as code.
  • Troubleshooting: where to look when something breaks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need prior OpenStack experience?

No. The Basic course starts from zero on OpenStack. We do assume you're comfortable with the Linux CLI, basic networking and virtualisation concepts. If you're coming from VMware or classic Linux admin, this is your way in.

Which version of OpenStack do you teach?

The latest stable release with an annual upgrade cycle — currently 2026.1 «Gazpacho». If a new one ships before your course, we refresh the material at no extra cost. Deployment is done with Kolla-Ansible, the leading upstream tool in production.

Is this Red Hat, Canonical or another vendor's training?

Neither. We teach upstream OpenStack, the community standard. What you learn applies equally to RHOSO/RHOSP (Red Hat), Charmed/Sunbeam (Canonical) or plain vanilla. No lock-in to any vendor's commercial roadmap.

We're moving off VMware — is this course a fit?

Yes, it's the natural way in. And if you also want to migrate VMware workloads during the course itself, you can bolt on the VMware migration module (+1 day) — you walk out with the cloud running and your first workloads already migrated.

And after? Are there more courses?

Yes. This is the Basic level of the OpenStack path. It's followed by the Intermediate level for running in production (observability, upgrades, security, Ceph) and the Advanced level for architecture at scale, Kubernetes and GPU. Each level is booked separately.

Format, group size and price?

On-site or live remote, from 2 attendees, in English, Spanish or French. Pricing is per group and adjusts to length and language. Tell us your case and we'll get back to you with something concrete.
