Hands-on course on Ceph deployment and administration

Three intensive days to go from the initial cluster to running Ceph with confidence: architecture, deployment, pool and placement group management, monitoring and incident response. Each student deploys their own cluster from scratch during the course.

[ 01 ]Why this course

Ceph is easy to install. The hard part is running it well when you have critical data on top.

The course is designed for Linux system administrators who need to spin up their first Ceph cluster and take it to a working state: block, object and file storage on a single cluster, with the architecture understood, the platform deployed with current tooling, pools and placement groups managed, and answers ready when something goes wrong.

We work with IBM Storage Ceph (formerly Red Hat Ceph). Training is 100% hands-on: each student deploys their own cluster from scratch. No pre-baked labs, no endless slides.

[ 02 ]Syllabus · 6 modules

From the first MON to a working cluster

The course is structured in six modules that go from the fundamentals to day-to-day operation. Each module combines technical explanation and lab work on the cluster the student deploys.

  1. 01
    Module 1

    Ceph fundamentals

What Ceph solves, how it differs from other distributed systems and when it makes sense to use it. RBD, RGW and CephFS service models. Real use cases.

  2. 02
    Module 2

    Ceph deployment

Installation and initial configuration with current deployment tooling. Hardware and network requirements. First working cluster by the end of the module.

  3. 03
    Module 3

    Architecture and core services

Role of MON, OSD, MDS and MGR. Placement Groups and the CRUSH algorithm. Replicated and erasure-coded pools. How data is distributed and protected.

  4. 04
    Module 4

    Client integration and provisioning

Publishing block (RBD), object (S3/Swift) and file (CephFS) storage. cephx authentication, user and capability management. Provisioning for real workloads.

  5. 05
    Module 5

    Troubleshooting and operations

Diagnosing common incidents: OSDs down, stuck PGs, degraded disks. Recovery procedures and maintenance without downtime.

  6. 06
    Module 6

    Monitoring and performance tuning

Ceph dashboard, key metrics and alerting thresholds. Basic performance tuning, benchmarking and early bottleneck detection.

[ 03 ]Who it's for and what you take away

Built for teams that need Ceph running, not a two-hour demo

The course is aimed at two specific profiles, on-site or live remote, with groups from 2 students.

  • Linux system administrators about to deploy their first Ceph cluster in the organisation.
  • Infrastructure architects and engineers who need to understand Ceph before deciding on distributed storage.
  • You leave with the Ceph cluster you deployed, the course materials and the Ceph Administrator Credly digital badge.
  • Prerequisite: solid Linux system administrator experience. No prior Ceph knowledge required.

SIXE Ceph Administrator digital badge on Credly — Level 1 (Introduction) certification from the Ceph learning path

Ceph Administrator · Level 1 · Introduction

Issued by SIXE on Credly on course completion. Certifies that you have deployed a working Ceph cluster and can operate it under normal conditions: pools, PGs, clients, basic monitoring and resolution of the most common incidents.

[ 05 ]Our difference

Why train with SIXE

  1. 01Engineers running critical infrastructureOur team has 15+ years deploying and running storage in production for enterprise clients — not full-time trainers, engineers who train.
  2. 02You deploy your own cluster from scratchEach student deploys Ceph during the course and works on it. No pre-baked labs. You take it with you at the end.
  3. 03Content tailored to your versionIf your team runs Ceph on a specific version in production, we align the lab with that version — not the latest release if that isn't useful.
  4. 04Groups from 2 · EN · ES · FROn-site at your offices or live remote. We adapt content, duration and schedule to the team's needs.

[ 07 ]Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the course

Do I need prior Ceph experience?

No. Solid Linux administrator experience is enough: systemd, networking, LVM, disks, permissions and the command line. The course starts from Ceph fundamentals.

How long is the course and what's the schedule?

Three intensive days, from 9:00 to 14:30. The schedule can be adjusted for the team if it's an in-company session. If you need half a day more or less, we discuss and adjust.

Which Ceph version is used in the lab?

We teach on the latest stable version of IBM Storage Ceph (formerly Red Hat Ceph). If your team runs an earlier version in production, we align the lab with that version so what's practised matches what you'll find when you're back at the office.

Is the Credly badge an official Ceph certification?

It's a SIXE own certification issued through Credly. Publicly verifiable with a unique link and ready for LinkedIn and CV. It doesn't replace an official certification from the Ceph project — it complements it as practical evidence that the student has deployed and operated a real cluster.

What do I take away when the course ends?

The Ceph cluster you deployed and worked on during the three days, the course materials, the Ceph Administrator Credly badge and the exercise guide with solutions to review later.

Format, group size and language?

On-site at your offices or live remote, from 2 students, in English, Spanish or French. We adapt content and duration to the team.

Can SIXE deploy Ceph for us after the course?

Yes. Alongside training we offer Ceph consulting, deployment and technical support in production. Tell us your case in the contact form.

Is this the same as the advanced administration course?

No. This is Level 1 of the SIXE Ceph learning path: fundamentals to working cluster. The Level 2 (Advanced) course assumes you've done this one or have equivalent experience, and focuses on performance tuning, deep troubleshooting and hardening.
