IBM Cognos Analytics Training | BI Reporting Courses

Official IBM Cognos training: reporting, modelling, planning and consolidation

The Cognos brand covers six products with separate lifecycles: the Cognos Analytics reporting platform, metadata modelling in Framework Manager, dynamic cubes in Cube Designer, planning in Cognos Planning, financial consolidation in Controller, and the TM1 line, now Planning Analytics. Each has its own lifecycle, and two of them have an expiry date.

Cognos Analytics: authoring reports and dashboards

The current product release is 12.1, and IBM official courses go up to 11.1. The report authoring interface changed between 11.0 and 11.1, so the useful course is the one for the release you have. If you are already on 12, we start from the 11.1 outline and flag at each point what has moved. The certification exam, where there is one, is booked separately and is not included.

  • Cognos Analytics: overview v11.0 (B6008G) — 1 day
  • Cognos Analytics: author reports fundamentals v11.1 (B6258G) — 3 days
  • Cognos Analytics: author reports fundamentals v11.0.x (B6158G) — 3 days
  • Cognos Analytics: author reports fundamentals v11.0 (B6058G) — 3 days
  • Cognos Analytics: advanced report authoring v11.1 (B6259G) — 2 days
  • Cognos Analytics: advanced report authoring v11.0.x (B6159G) — 2 days
  • Cognos Analytics: advanced report authoring v11.0 (B6059G) — 2 days
  • Cognos Analytics: reporting with multidimensional data v11.0 (B6061G) — 2 days
  • Cognos Analytics: Active Reports v11.0 (B6098G) — 1 day
  • Cognos Analytics: dashboard essentials v11.1 (B6289G) — 1 day
  • Cognos Analytics: enterprise administration v11.1 (B6255G) — 2 days
  • Cognos Analytics: enterprise administration v11.0.x (B6155G) — 2 days
  • Cognos Analytics: enterprise administration v11.0 (B6055G) — 3 days
  • Cognos Analytics: architecture and logging v11.0 (B6019G) — 2 days

Modelling: Framework Manager and Cube Designer

The model decides what figures each report returns, and when it is badly built it returns them wrong with no error raised. Framework Manager covers the relational model; Cube Designer covers in-memory cubes, where the hardware has to be sized as well.

  • Cognos Framework Manager: metadata models v11.1 (B6252G) — 4 days
  • Cognos Framework Manager: metadata models v11.0.x (B6152G) — 4 days
  • Cognos Framework Manager: metadata models v11.0 (B6052G) — 5 days
  • Cognos Cube Designer: dynamic cubes v11.0 (B6063G) — 2 days

Cognos Planning

Support for Cognos Planning 10.2.x ends on 31 March 2027, and the product was withdrawn from marketing on 28 August 2026. Anyone holding a service extension will last a little longer, but the direction is settled: what replaces Cognos Planning is Planning Analytics. We keep these courses because installations are still in production, and because that migration gets planned by first looking at which models exist.

  • Cognos Planning: overview v10.1 (P8106G) — 2 days
  • Cognos Planning Analyst: build models v10.1 (P8101G) — 5 days
  • Cognos Planning Contributor: develop applications v10.1 (P8105G) — 4 days
  • Cognos Planning: explore and contribute to plans v10.1 (P8104G) — 1 day
  • Cognos Planning: administer the technical environment v10.1 (P8107G) — 3 days

Cognos Controller: financial consolidation

The official outline is for 10.2/10.3 and the current branch is 11.1, with consolidation in Controller Web. The accounting process is the same: we deliver the course on your release.

  • Cognos Controller: develop applications v10.2/10.3 (P8221G) — 5 days
  • Cognos Controller: author reports v10.2/10.3 (P8222G) — 1 day

TM1 and Planning Analytics

These courses sit here from when the product was called Cognos TM1. Training on the current release is in Planning Analytics, which is where to look if you are starting from scratch.

  • Planning Analytics / TM1: modelling in Performance Modeler (P8252G) — 5 days
  • Planning Analytics / TM1: modelling in Architect v10.2 (P8261G) — 5 days
  • Planning Analytics / TM1: analyse and share data v10.2 (P8257G) — 3 days
  • Planning Analytics / TM1: create scorecards v10.2 (P8259G) — 1 day
  • Cognos TM1: administer the technical environment v10.2 (P8255G) — 2 days
  • Cognos TM1: what’s new in V10.2 (P8258G) — 1 day

Incentive compensation and ETL

ICM moved to Varicent on 1 January 2020 and is no longer an IBM product; Data Manager has been withdrawn since 2015, with entitlements migrated to DataStage. The courses stay published because the installations keep turning up, and the outline is the one it always was.

  • IBM ICM: Building the Model (v10) — 4 days
  • IBM ICM: Building Reports (v10) — 3 days
  • IBM ICM Building the Model (V9.0) — 4 days
  • IBM ICM – Building Reports (v.9.0) — 3 days
  • Cognos Data Manager: build data marts v10.2 (B5280G) — 5 days

The ideal path

For a team that will be running Cognos Analytics, the order is: report authoring fundamentals for your release, then the advanced course, and finally Framework Manager, because whoever understands the model writes better reports and stops asking for impossible things. Nine days spread out, and with that the team stands on its own.

If you will also administer the platform, enterprise administration runs in parallel and does not depend on the others.

By level

Beginner. The one-day overview, for teams where several roles work together and need shared vocabulary; and report authoring fundamentals, which is the real way in.

Intermediate. Advanced reporting, dashboards, reporting with multidimensional data when the source is OLAP — that is where most people get stuck, because dimensional filtering is nothing like relational — and enterprise administration.

Expert. Framework Manager for the metadata model, Cube Designer when there are dynamic cubes, and architecture and logging, almost always taken once there is a performance problem the logs will not explain.

Planning, Controller and TM1 are separate paths and share no ladder with these: each has its own block below.

How they are delivered

We are an IBM Business Partner: the material and labs are the official ones and our own engineers teach them, at your premises or remotely with a live instructor. Groups are private, so the outline gets fitted to the release you have and to what the team does.

If you are not sure which of these courses applies, tell us which Cognos release you have installed and what it is used for, and we will come back with the specific course and its length. The full catalogue is in the official IBM training hub.
