Official IBM i training on Power servers

IBM i is the system that inherited the AS/400 and still runs the invoicing, the warehouse and the accounts of thousands of companies that rarely talk about it. It lives inside the Power server, with its database built in, and it is administered with a model of its own: objects and libraries instead of the directory hierarchy you arrive used to, jobs spread across subsystems, and queues deciding what runs and when. It lives alongside a Unix-style file system, the IFS, which is how most open source software gets in.

One immediate date: IBM i 7.4

IBM i 7.4 leaves standard support on 30 September 2026. The releases left are 7.5 and 7.6, the latter published in April 2025 and supported on Power10 and Power11. If your machine is still on 7.4 or below, the move is no longer next year’s project.

Our own course on what is new in 7.6

This one is not from the IBM catalogue: we wrote it and we update it whenever something ships. What’s new in IBM i 7.6 and Power10 covers in three days what changes when you move to 7.6 on Power10, which is exactly the conversation we are having with almost every customer still on an older release.

The ideal path

For someone taking charge of an IBM i without coming from the platform, the order that works best is: technical introduction to understand how it is organised inside, system administration as the five-day backbone, and performance tuning I once there is something in production to watch. Twelve days spread over a few months.

If the job is operations rather than administration, the path changes and shortens: system operator and then the advanced workshop.

By level

Beginner. The one-day introduction for new users, for anyone who has never seen a green screen; the technical introduction for systems profiles; and the operator course, which teaches daily handling without assuming anything.

Intermediate. System administration, the advanced operator workshop, Control Language for automation, DB2 for i for the data side — stitched into the operating system on this platform — and the HMC if you manage the hardware.

Expert. The two performance courses, which run in sequence; PowerVM and logical partitions; BRMS to get the backups in order; and the open source tools, useful when the team comes from Linux and wants to work with what it already knows.

Starting from scratch

  • Introduction to IBM i for new users (OE98G) — 1 day. One day for anyone who has never seen a green screen.
  • IBM i technical introduction (OL4AG) — 4 days. The technical version, for systems profiles.

Operations

  • System operator for IBM i (AS24G). The day-to-day of the console.
  • Advanced system operator workshop (AS27G) — 3 days. Subsystems, job queues and authorities.

Administration and infrastructure

  • IBM i system administration (OL19G) — 5 days. The backbone administration course.
  • Managing Power systems with the HMC (OL52G) — 2 days. The HMC for managing the hardware.
  • PowerVM: virtualisation and LPAR (AS5EG) — 3 days. Logical partitions and virtualisation.
  • BRMS: backup and cloud storage (AS28G) — 5 days. Backups, including cloud storage.

Development and data

  • Control Language (CL) programming (OL20G) — 4 days. Automating with CL.
  • DB2 for i: coding with DDS and SQL (OL62G) — 3 days. The integrated database, with DDS and SQL.
  • Open source tools on IBM i (AS40G) — 2 days. Open source on IBM i.

Performance

  • Performance tuning I: structure and basic tuning (OL23G) — 3 days. How the system is put together and what can be tuned.
  • Performance tuning II: advanced analysis and capacity (OL66G) — 4 days. Advanced analysis and sizing.

How they are delivered

We are an IBM Business Partner: the material and labs are the official ones and our own engineers teach them, at your premises or remotely with a live instructor. Groups are private and the exercises are built on the IBM i release you run and, where it helps, on a partition of your own.

If it is the language you are after, RPG has its own category: RPG training.

Tell us which release you are on and what each person on the team does, and we will come back with the course sequence and how many days it adds up to.
