Four of the courses in this category we deliver in our own version. The four IBM originals still sit on POWER8 and on Linux releases that are out of support, so we rebuilt the syllabus and the labs on Power10, SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9. Same scope, our own courseware, and we match it to the release you run.
- Introduction to IBM PowerVM and Power10 (SX024G), on top of IBM’s LX024G. Partitioning and LPAR operation on Power10.
- Red Hat and SUSE Linux administration on Power (SLX035G), on top of LX034G. IBM’s measured on POWER8; this one runs on Power10 with SUSE 15 and RHEL 9.
- Linux on IBM Power for x86 administrators (SLX15G), on top of LX15G, with the distributions and the hardware that are in support.
- Linux high availability with Pacemaker on RHEL and SUSE (SLX089G), with DRBD, a two-node cluster and SAP HANA as the resource.
Learning path
Getting started: you administer Linux on x86 and Power lands on your desk
Start with Linux on IBM Power for x86 administrators (SLX15G), the bridge: where boot, partitioning and the diagnostic tooling differ. Then Open Source Linux on IBM Power (LX012G) covers the community distributions on ppc64le, which is where people usually test before committing to an enterprise distribution.
Intermediate: you already run Linux on Power
Virtualisation comes next: Introduction to IBM PowerVM and Power10 (SX024G), and with that in hand, Red Hat and SUSE Linux administration on Power (SLX035G), which is where you find out why an LPAR is not performing.
Professional: projects on Power
High availability: Linux high availability with Pacemaker on RHEL and SUSE (SLX089G). Containers: Containers on IBM Power (LX063G) and then Red Hat OpenShift on Power Systems (QZC42G). SAP: SAP HANA on IBM Power (QZD20G).
Frequently asked questions
I administer Linux on x86, does what I know carry over? Almost all of it. What changes is virtualisation, boot, how resources are shared between LPARs, and the diagnostic tooling. SLX15G spends its time on that difference instead of repeating what you already know.
Which distributions are used? Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise and Ubuntu Server, the ones supported on Power for production workloads. LX012G also covers the community ones.
On site or remote? Both. Remote is live with an instructor, not recorded. On site, at your premises.
How is this different from the Linux category? Linux is the general catalogue, Linux on mainframe included. This category is the courses where the Power platform is the subject: PowerVM, LPAR performance, HA, OpenShift and SAP HANA on Power. AIX and IBM i, although they run on the same hardware, are under AIX and IBM i.
