01 Learning path

Three courses, three project roles

Each level targets a specific role and can be taken on its own. These are SIXE's own materials rather than a translation of the official course: hands-on labs and exercises adapted to your programme's attribute schema. We also deliver the courses with an official IBM code, as an IBM Business Partner.

02 The problem

Three thousand requirements and a spreadsheet that no longer holds

The day the customer changes a top-level requirement, the question is never where it is written. It is what downstream is affected and what evidence has to be redone before the next delivery.

DOORS answers that in seconds because the links live inside the tool, not in a spreadsheet somebody keeps by hand. All three courses revolve around that mechanism.

The requirement is a row; insert another one above it and the cross-reference points somewhere else.
Every object carries its own identifier within its module, which does not change when requirements are inserted above it or the hierarchy is reordered.
History means track changes plus an email with the right attachment.
Per-attribute history: which value changed, who changed it and when.
Traceability lives in a separate tab that goes stale in the first week.
Typed links between modules, with a coverage matrix and impact analysis in both directions.
A source requirement changes and nobody knows which tests stopped being valid.
Suspect links: the tool flags on its own whatever is left to review.
The version the auditor sees is the file somebody saved in a folder.
Reproducible baselines and baseline sets across several linked modules at once.

03 Which version you run

How DOORS 9 and DOORS Next differ

They share a commercial name but they are two different products: DOORS 9 is the long-standing desktop client and DOORS Next is the web application on the Jazz platform. Mixing them up when planning training is expensive: you end up buying a DXL course for a team that will work on Jazz, where DXL does not exist. If you are not sure which one you are on, this table settles it.

We travel with the lab already built. If you have your own DOORS environment, we adapt the exercises to your real project schema.

Live online

Live sessions with an instructor, not recorded video. Every attendee gets their own lab instance for the duration of the course.

Tailored path

We combine modules from the three levels when the team has mixed profiles. That is the norm on programmes with a supplier and an OEM.

What is IBM DOORS and what is it used for?

IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS is a requirements management tool that stores every requirement as an identifiable object inside modules, lets you link them across levels (system, software, hardware, test) and keeps the history of every change. It is used mostly on safety-critical programmes where you have to demonstrate to an auditor that every requirement is implemented and verified. It was previously called Rational DOORS.

Do I need to know how to program?

Not for fundamentals or advanced. The expert level does require previous experience in a structured language: DXL has a syntax close to C and the course moves fast on that assumption.

Can I skip the fundamentals level?

Yes, if you already work with DOORS daily. We run a quick check on the intro call: if you can create a formal module, link objects across two modules and read a traceability matrix, you can go straight to advanced.

Are the courses about DOORS 9 or DOORS Next?

Fundamentals and advanced are delivered on DOORS 9.7.2, the classic branch still in production on most programmes. DOORS Next 7.1 is covered at expert level, including the component and global configuration model and the absence of DXL on that platform.

Can the exercises be adapted to our project?

Yes, and that is what we recommend for closed corporate training. We work on an anonymised copy of your attribute schema and link structure, so what the team practises in class is what they will do the next day.

How big are the groups?

Small. These are lab-based courses and every attendee works on their own instance, so the size is set to let the instructor review each person's work. We agree it with you when fixing the dates.

Do you also deliver the official IBM courses?

Yes. We are an IBM Business Partner and carry the official course codes for the DOORS family. These three courses are SIXE's own materials, with labs designed by our instructors; if you specifically need the IBM code, see the official IBM Rational catalogue.

Do you help afterwards with the migration to DOORS Next?

Yes, as a consulting service separate from training: analysis of the current model, component and global configuration strategy, and a phased migration plan. Get in touch and we will look at it.

What language are they delivered in?

English, with English materials. We also deliver in Spanish and French. Tool terminology stays in English because the interface is in English, and because that is how it appears in the IBM documentation you will consult afterwards.
