Virtualisation, databases and storage in 2U

It suits a virtualisation cluster with local storage, a large database or a Ceph node: it holds up to 40 × 2.5" or 16 × 3.5" drives, and has ten PCIe slots for fast networking or controllers. It takes GPUs, but only a few: up to two L40S or ten L4.

Lenovo has published tests of AI agents running on this server with the CPU alone, using models of 7 to 8 billion parameters. They're enough for an internal service with a few users; for many at once, GPUs are the better choice.

What we do

We deliver it with whatever it will run: Proxmox, VMware ESXi, RHEL, Ubuntu, SLES or Windows Server, with storage and networking configured. If it's going to be part of a Ceph cluster or a private cloud with OpenStack, we build it together with the rest: we explain how in private cloud.

Supported GPUs

GPUMemoryHow many
NVIDIA L40S48 GBUp to 2, double-width
NVIDIA L424 GBUp to 10, low-profile

For four double-width GPUs, such as the RTX PRO 6000, the model is the SR650a V4.

What your data centre needs

It takes 2U and is 796 mm deep. It has two redundant power supplies, which Lenovo offers from 800 to 3,200 W depending on the drives, processors and cards fitted. It's air-cooled with six fans, with Neptune Core as an option for the processors.

Questions about the ThinkSystem SR650 V4

How does it differ from the SR650a V4?

The SR650a V4 is the GPU version: it carries them at the front and takes four double-width cards, such as the RTX PRO 6000. The SR650 V4 takes two at most, but has far more drive bays and slots. If the machine is for AI, the SR650a V4; if it's for virtualisation or data with some AI on the side, the SR650 V4.

Which processors does it support?

Intel Xeon 6 from the 6700P and 6500P series, with up to 86 cores and 350 W per processor, in one- or two-processor configurations. It doesn't take the efficient-core models (6700E); the SR630 V4 does.

What warranty does it come with?

One or three years depending on the model, with an on-site engineer next business day. On top of that we can provide our 24×7 on-call support with SLA.

Is the SR650 V4 right for what you're building?

Tell us what will run on it, how many drives and what network you need, and we'll come back with the configuration, the price and a confirmed lead time.
