Supermicro edge servers for shops, plants and small cabinets

Four machines for taking compute out of the data centre: a fanless Jetson Orin NX for computer vision, two x86 boxes in a compact 1U format and a 1U only 287 mm deep for the branch cabinet.

How to choose: fan, architecture and depth

What shapes the choice most is where the machine is going to live. The ARS-E103-JONX-H2 has no fan or vents and the datasheet rates it from -25 to 60 °C, so it can sit next to a dusty production line, whereas the two compact 1U boxes have fans and work from 0 to 40 °C, which keeps them in a comms room. With no moving parts there is less to break, and in exchange you get less general-purpose processing.

The Jetson is Arm and its strength is the integrated GPU: 157 TOPS sparse (the figure that counts skipping the model's zero weights) in Super mode (its higher clock and power profile), enough to analyse several cameras, although everything that runs on it has to be built for aarch64. The x86 units, the AS-E300-14GR with a 16-core EPYC 4545P and the SYS-E300-14AR with a Core Ultra 5 245 and 10 GbE, run the same software as your data centre servers, whether virtual machines or containers, and they are the right pick when the edge is a small site with its own services.

If the site already has a 19-inch comms cabinet, the SYS-111AD-HN2 goes where a data centre server will not fit: 287 mm deep, two 1.92 TB SSDs for mirroring and 64 GB of memory. Bear in mind that all the edge machines in the Gold Series carry a one-year Supermicro warranty, against three years for the data centre servers, which matters when planning spares for many sites.

Why buy from us

We deliver the machine installed, and if it ever fails you call the same team that put it into service.

We rack it, configure remote management (BMC) and install RHEL, SUSE, Ubuntu or Proxmox, with whatever runs on top already installed and tested: a Ceph cluster, OpenStack, Kubernetes with the NVIDIA GPU Operator, or Slurm.

When something fails you speak to the people who know that machine because they commissioned it, and if you need it there is 24×7 on-call cover with a contractual SLA. It's the same independent support we provide for IBM Power, Linux and Ceph estates.

If you need different memory, drives or networking, we start from the same base model. Tell us what you need in the custom server configurator and we'll call you back within 24 hours with a proposal.

We are an IBM Business Partner and a Red Hat, SUSE and Canonical partner, which is what counts when the server has to slot into an environment with existing systems and licences.

We work across Europe in all three languages, support included, so if your company has offices in Madrid and Brussels, the same team looks after both.

Frequently asked questions

What is edge computing?

Processing data where it is generated, in the shop or the plant, instead of sending it to the data centre or the cloud. It pays off when latency matters, the link to head office is unreliable or there is too much video to upload all of it.

What is the Jetson Orin NX?

An NVIDIA module that combines an 8-core Arm CPU, an Ampere-architecture GPU and 16 GB of memory shared between them. With JetPack 6.2 and Super mode it reaches 157 TOPS (trillion operations per second) sparse and 78 dense. It is the module inside the ARS-E103-JONX-H2-01-G2.

How are they managed when spread across many sites?

The AS-E300-14GR and the SYS-111AD have a BMC (the remote management controller) with its own port, so you can power them on, see their console and reinstall them remotely. For applications we usually deploy k3s, a lightweight Kubernetes, and run all the units as one fleet from a single place, with the Jetson included as an Arm node.

What warranty do they have?

One year parts and labour from Supermicro, with advance shipment of replacement parts during that year. If you are rolling out many units, we work out with you how many spares to keep and what support you need on top.

Can I run AI models on the x86 units?

On the CPU, small models or ones with few requests. The SYS-E300-14AR-01-G2 has a low-profile PCIe 5.0 x16 slot for a compact accelerator, within the limits of its 180 W power supply. For computer vision across several cameras, the Jetson has the GPU built in and needs no fan.

Which one fits your sites?

Tell us how many sites you have and what needs to run at each one, and we'll come back with the price and a confirmed lead time.
