WebSphere

We deliver the twenty-three official WebSphere courses: IBM MQ messaging, the application server, process automation and data transformation between formats. We teach them on the release you have installed, not the latest one IBM has shipped, because the person teaching is the same engineer who deploys and migrates these products and can move the labs to your release.

Online or in person, and at your premises if that suits you better. Tell us your release and which operating system you work on when you ask for dates.

The ideal path

These are two products with different teams, so there are two paths and they do not cross.

To administer IBM MQ, the order is the technical introduction to IBM MQ (WM103G) — one day to settle the vocabulary and understand what a queue, a channel and a queue manager are — then system administration with Windows labs (WM153G) or the same with Linux labs (WM154G) depending on where your queue managers run, and advanced administration (WM213G) once there is something in production getting stuck. By the end the team can build a queue manager from scratch, define channels and queues, and knows where to start when a channel sits there stopped.

To administer WebSphere Application Server, the administration course for your release: WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5 administration (WA855G) if you are on 8.5.5, WebSphere Application Server V9 administration (WA590G) if you are on 9. Then administration in a federated environment (WA599G), where you learn to handle a cell with several nodes. If what you run is Liberty, WebSphere Liberty administration (WA190G) goes straight there in two days.

By level

Beginner. the technical introduction to IBM MQ (WM103G), one day, which works for technical profiles and equally for whoever has to make decisions about the platform without administering it. And WebSphere Liberty administration (WA190G), the natural way into Liberty.

Intermediate. The system administration courses: system administration with Windows labs (WM153G) and the same with Linux labs (WM154G) on MQ, WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5 administration (WA855G) and WebSphere Application Server V9 administration (WA590G) on the application server. For developers, application development on Linux (WM508G) and application development on Windows (WM513G).

Expert. advanced administration (WM213G) and IBM MQ clusters (WM253G) to design and run a cluster of queue managers; administration in a federated environment (WA599G) for the federated environment; and on the mainframe system administration for z/OS (WM302G), advanced administration for z/OS (WM312G), WebSphere for z/OS implementation (ES68G) and Liberty on z/OS (ESB4G), separate courses because integration with the system on z/OS is unlike anything on distributed.

Modernising what is already running

Two three-day courses for the road from an existing application to a container: cloud-native applications with IBM Liberty (WA610G), on microservices, MicroProfile and deployment on Kubernetes; and transformation with WebSphere Hybrid Edition (WA615G), which covers assessment with Cloud Transformation Advisor and modernisation on Red Hat OpenShift.

Process automation

automation with IBM RPA (WB502G) to build bots that do the repetitive work a person does by hand today. integrating API Connect with IBM BPM (WB832G), one day, to call the APIs of the house from your processes. And Business Monitor to watch processes while they happen: the three-day course (WB895G) if you will only build the models, the four-day course (WB896G) if you also maintain the platform.

Transformation Extender (6J03G) covers data transformation between rigid formats — banking files, EDI, insurance or healthcare messages — where the format is fixed by an external standard and a CSV will not do.

About releases

IBM MQ 9.4 is the current long-term support release. 9.1 stops receiving critical fixes on 30 September 2026: if that is what you run, IBM MQ 9.1 administration (WM156G) is still published, and we deliver the same outline on 9.4, which is where you need to end up.

On the application server the picture is different. IBM has announced no end-of-support date for 8.5.5 or 9.0.5, so no deadline is pushing you; the reasons to modernise are other ones, and they have to do with the cost of operating the platform and with how long it takes to get a change into production.
