An entry-level server that grows from within

The domain controller, file server, company website and a couple of virtual machines for an SME or a web host fit comfortably today in its 16 cores and 64 GB, and the interesting part is the gap between what it ships with and what it supports. The EPYC 9005 platform supports twelve memory channels, up to 3 TB and processors of up to 160 cores, so when you need more you upgrade without changing the box. What is more, 16 cores is the minimum licensed per server in Windows Server, so with a single processor you are not paying for unused cores.

Two modules fill only two of the twelve channels, and memory bandwidth stays well below what the processor can handle. For those workloads it makes no difference, but if you plan to use it for databases or analytics, or need the operating system on two mirrored M.2 drives from day one, we quote it as a custom build with the memory spread across more modules and the second drive, bearing in mind that this takes it out of the Gold configuration.

What we do

We usually deliver it with Proxmox VE and its backups configured, or with RHEL or Ubuntu if it is going to do a single job, firmware up to date and the BMC (the remote management controller) reachable so we can look after it remotely. With our independent support we also cover the rest of the servers in the office, whatever the brand.

Questions about the AS-1115CS-TNR-02-G2

Does it take GPUs?

Up to two single-width cards, NVIDIA A2 or L4. With an L4 it can handle video transcoding or inference on small models, although with 64 GB of memory you would want to upgrade first.

What networking does it have and how can it be upgraded?

Two 10 GbE RJ45 ports, which run over copper to a 10GBASE-T switch and save on transceivers, the practical choice in an office or a small rack. The chassis has two AIOM slots (Supermicro's OCP 3.0-compatible network card format), so moving to 25 GbE is a matter of adding or swapping a card.

How far can it grow without changing server?

Up to twelve modules and 3 TB of memory, an EPYC 9005 processor with up to 160 cores and ten 2.5-inch front bays for NVMe, SAS or SATA. Changing the processor or filling channels is an upgrade we quote and fit when the time comes.
