Eight dedicated servers in three rack units

Dedicated hosting and cloud gaming share a pattern: many customers or services that each need their own physical machine, small and with a high clock speed. The EPYC 4565P is an AM5-socket processor (the same socket as desktop Ryzen) at 4.3 GHz, which favours game servers, build jobs and single-threaded applications, and putting eight in 3U with shared power supplies saves space and cabling compared with eight 1U servers.

Each node has four memory slots with a ceiling of 192 GB, which is why it is no good for consolidating virtualisation: here each workload either fits on its node or it does not. The two 2,200 W power supplies are shared by all eight, and if you need transcoding, each node takes a single single-width GPU (NVIDIA A2, L4 or T4).

What we do

For a hosting provider we install all eight nodes from the same image, with automated provisioning through the BMC (the remote management controller). For internal use the usual choice is an eight-node Kubernetes or a Proxmox VE cluster with high availability, although with 64 GB per node containers make more sense than virtual machines.

Questions about the AS-3015MR-H8TNR-01-G2

How does it differ from the AS-2115GT-HNTR-01-G2 GrandTwin?

The GrandTwin puts four large nodes in 2U, each with a 64-core EPYC 9534, 512 GB and 100 GbE, designed to form a cluster. The MicroCloud divides 3U among eight nodes with 16 cores and 64 GB, so more servers and much smaller ones. For many customers who each need their own machine the MicroCloud fits, and for a cluster of large nodes, the GrandTwin.

Does it work as an alternative to several microservers?

Each node is a rack microserver with a 16-core EPYC 4005, its own NVMe drives and its own BMC. Having eight in one chassis with shared redundant power supplies keeps the rack and its management tidier than eight separate boxes, each with its own power supply and cables.

What networking does each node have?

Two 10/25 GbE ports on an AOC (an add-on network card, not built into the board) per node, so the full chassis needs sixteen switch ports. It is worth counting them before you order, because in a hosting rack you usually run out of ports before rack units.
