Intel density for cloud and service providers

A cloud provider or a data centre rolling out many identical nodes looks for 72 cores and 1 TB per rack unit for IaaS (infrastructure as a service) or private and hybrid cloud, and that is what this 1U delivers. The CloudDC range follows the DC-MHS specification (Data Center Modular Hardware System, the OCP modular hardware standard) and supports OpenBMC, the open management firmware.

Compared with the SYS-222H-TN-01 it gives up card space, with three low-profile PCIe slots and only single-width GPUs such as the NVIDIA L4 or the A1000. If inference or virtual desktops with double-width GPUs are on the horizon, the 2U is a better starting point.

What we do

It suits repeatable deployments and that is how we treat it: identical firmware and BIOS across every node, automated network installation of RHEL, Ubuntu or OpenStack, and the BMC (the remote management controller) integrated into your tools via Redfish, the standard remote management interface.

Questions about the SYS-122C-TN-01-G2

What is DC-MHS and how does it affect me?

It is an Open Compute Project specification that standardises the format of boards, management modules and I/O, so the same chassis accepts interchangeable parts. For a data centre with dozens of nodes it makes maintenance and upgrades easier; with two or three servers it changes very little.

Can I run hardware RAID on the NVMe drives?

It supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 with Intel VROC, the RAID built into the processor, which needs a separate hardware key. If the storage is going to be Ceph you do not need it, because Ceph handles redundancy across nodes.

How much memory does it support?

It has 32 slots, two per channel. With one module per channel it reaches 4 TB at 6,400 MT/s, which means swapping modules, and filling all 32 takes it to 8 TB at 6,000 MT/s. With MRDIMM (modules that combine two ranks to gain bandwidth) it stays at 1 TB, but at 8,000 MT/s.

Is the SYS-122C-TN-01-G2 right for what you're building?

Tell us about the workload and the data centre it's going into, and we'll come back with the price, a confirmed lead time and what it would take to get it running.
