Lots of virtual machines per rack unit

This is a virtualisation and private cloud node where clock speed matters most: 64 cores running at 3.55 GHz and 24 GB of memory per core, a generous ratio for database VMs or for applications licensed per core, where you want to get the most out of each core rather than add many slow ones. The 24 slots carry one module per channel, so the memory runs at the full DDR5-6400 speed.

Fitting all that into 1U costs you card space: three PCIe 5.0 x16 slots and no room for a double-width GPU. If a GPU is on the roadmap, look at the AS-2126HS-TN-01, which uses the same board in 2U. Going beyond 1.5 TB on either of them means moving to higher-capacity modules, because there are no free slots left.

What we do

We usually install it as a Proxmox VE or OpenStack node, with firmware and BIOS updated before it ships and the BMC (the remote management controller) registered on your management network. With three or more in the same rack we build Ceph on the NVMe bays so the VM disks live on the nodes themselves, and if you are coming from vSphere we plan the migration from VMware to Proxmox one machine at a time.

Questions about the AS-1126HS-TN-01-G2

How does it differ from the AS-2126HS-TN-01-G2?

They share the same dual-socket motherboard and the same 24 slots with 1.5 TB. The AS-2126HS moves up to 2U and carries two 192-core EPYC, designed to consolidate hundreds of small workloads, whereas this one stays at 64 faster cores that give more performance per licence. The 2U model also takes up to three double-width GPUs and up to 24 bays.

How many drives does it hold?

The chassis takes up to twelve 2.5-inch front bays depending on the backplane, and the standard version ships with eight, so we confirm how many the Gold unit has before you order. The configuration includes two 960 GB NVMe drives intended for the operating system, leaving the rest for data or Ceph.

How far can the memory grow?

With EPYC 9005 it reaches 6 TB at 6,400 MT/s with one module per channel, which means swapping the 24 64 GB modules for 256 GB ones. As every slot is already in use, any upgrade is a replacement, and it is best decided before ordering if you already know 1.5 TB will fall short.

Is the AS-1126HS-TN-01-G2 right for what you're building?
