Consolidating a whole estate into a few chassis

Hundreds of small virtual machines, containers or web services that scale by instance count: that is the workload this configuration uses to retire a fleet of ageing dual-socket servers in one go. The EPYC 9965 uses Zen 5c cores, more compact and clocked lower (2.25 GHz), designed to run many workloads at once rather than squeeze the most out of a single thread.

Before ordering it, check three things. Memory comes to 4 GB per core, little for large virtual machines, and since the 24 slots are already full, upgrading means replacing modules. Standard storage is two 960 GB M.2 drives for the operating system, so data will go on the bays, which ship empty, or on external storage. And if your hypervisor is licensed per core, 384 cores will show on the invoice.

What we do

With a per-core hypervisor licence the maths usually points towards Proxmox VE or OpenStack, and on this machine we deploy them with Ceph on the bays when there are three or more nodes, separating storage traffic from VM traffic on the 25 GbE network. If 4 GB per core is too tight for you, we start from this base and configure it as a custom server with more memory.

Questions about the AS-2126HS-TN-01-G2

What is the board's CXL support for?

The board supports up to four CXL 2.0 devices, a standard that lets you add memory through the PCIe 5.0 slots. It is a way to go beyond 1.5 TB without emptying the DIMM slots, although that memory has higher latency than the channel memory and you need to check first that your hypervisor handles it.

Does it take GPUs?

Up to three double-width cards, including the NVIDIA L40S, H100 NVL or the RTX PRO Blackwell range. The Gold configuration has none, so if you plan to add virtual desktops or light inference, mention it when you order so we can check power supplies and cooling.

How many drives does it hold?

The chassis takes up to 24 2.5-inch NVMe or SATA front bays depending on the backplane, and the standard version ships with eight, so we confirm how many the Gold unit has before you order. As the operating system sits on the two M.2 drives, every bay is free for data or Ceph.
