Intel private cloud with room to grow

This is the dual-socket Intel option with the most headroom in the family. Its 96 cores and 1 TB cover a mid-sized virtualisation or OpenShift cluster, and what sets it apart is what it leaves free: space for four double-width GPUs, so the same node can host virtual desktops or inference when the time comes, and sixteen of its 32 memory slots. Filling them takes memory up to 8 TB at 6,000 MT/s, and by swapping modules you can reach 4 TB without dropping below 6,400.

If the workload is already known and will not grow, you are paying for a 2U chassis with space you will never use, and the SYS-122C-TN-01 fits 72 Xeon cores into half the space. With GPUs inside, it is also worth checking the power supplies and the power available per rack.

What we do

For private cloud on Intel we build OpenShift or Kubernetes with Ceph, or OpenStack when several teams need to be served with quotas. When the GPUs arrive we install the NVIDIA GPU Operator, which handles drivers and scheduling so the cluster shares them out without anyone touching each node by hand.

Questions about the SYS-222H-TN-01-G2

What do I gain over the SYS-122C-TN-01-G2?

Space for cards. Both use two Xeon 6 with 32 memory slots, but the 1U model only accepts single-width GPUs such as the L4 or the A1000, whereas this one takes four double-width cards and offers direct-to-chip liquid cooling as an option. In return, the SYS-122C puts 72 cores into a single unit.

Can I use MRDIMM or CXL memory?

With P-core Xeon such as the 6740P it supports MRDIMM (modules that combine two ranks to gain bandwidth) at 8,000 MT/s up to 1 TB, and the board accepts up to four CXL 2.0 devices. MRDIMMs are worthwhile for compute that lives on memory bandwidth; for virtualisation, the standard RDIMMs are the reasonable choice.

How many drives does it support?

The standard version ships with eight 2.5-inch front bays for NVMe, SAS or SATA, and there are 16- and 24-bay variants, so we confirm how many the Gold unit has before you order. The two 3.8 TB NVMe drives take two of them, and the rest are free for data or Ceph.

Is the SYS-222H-TN-01-G2 right for what you're building?

Tell us about the workload and the data centre it's going into, and we'll come back with the price, a confirmed lead time and what it would take to get it running.
