Analytics and databases on a single socket

For a large PostgreSQL, a columnar engine or a single-node Spark, what counts is the combination of cores and memory bandwidth, and here you get 96 cores on a single processor. With the processor in NPS1, the default mode, all the memory forms a single NUMA domain (a memory zone with uniform latency), so no query pays the cost of hopping to another socket. The twelve modules sit one per channel and the board runs them at 5,200 MT/s, the maximum for this chassis with EPYC 9005. On top of that, software licensed per socket only sees one.

768 GB works out at 8 GB per core. If the dataset does not fit, growing means filling the second slot on each channel, at which point the memory drops to 4,400 or 4,000 MT/s depending on the module, or replacing the modules with higher-capacity ones, and that decision is best made before you order.

What we do

We deliver it with RHEL, SUSE or Ubuntu tuned for databases: huge memory pages, the BIOS power profile set to performance and the NVMe drives laid out according to what the engine will write. If a production database runs on it, our contracted 24×7 on-call support also covers the operating system and firmware.

Questions about the AS-2115HS-TNR-02-G2

What do I gain from one 96-core processor over two smaller ones?

With NPS1 all the memory sits in the same NUMA domain, so the database does not pay the latency of fetching data from the other socket, and per-socket licences count just one. The trade-off is a ceiling of twelve memory channels, where two processors would give you twenty-four.

What is the maximum memory it supports?

With EPYC 9005 it reaches 3 TB at 5,200 MT/s with one module per channel, and 6 TB with all 24 slots filled, by then at 4,400 or 4,000 MT/s depending on the module. Starting from 768 GB with all twelve channels populated leaves half the slots free for upgrades.

Why 5,200 MT/s if the modules are DDR5-6400?

Because the speed is set by the board, not the module. This single-socket board supports a maximum of 5,200 MT/s with one module per channel, and DDR5-6400 modules run happily at that rate. If your workload needs the full 6,400 MT/s, the AS-1126HS-TN-01 reaches it with its 24 modules across two processors.
